Wake Forest’s LJVM Coliseum to Operate as Evacuation Shelter

Wake Forest University’s LJVM Coliseum will open Wednesday evening as an evacuation center for people evacuating from the coast.

University officials said in a press release they are preparing for regular class hours and campus operations Thursday and Friday.

Forsyth County Emergency Management confirmed the shelter will be state-run, with the American Red Cross and Forsyth County taking over operations. A representative from Forsyth County Emergency said it is unusual to have a shelter this far west; typically shelters will stop around Raleigh/Durham.

State leaders confirmed there are 16 shelters open as of Wednesday afternoon, with about 4,000 people coming and going.

As of Wednesday morning, storm tracking showed the hurricane tracking towards the coast.
