A House select committee is beginning its investigation into the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Mississippi Democrat Bennie Thompson opened the first hearing and labeled it a nonpartisan investigation.

He called the Capitol attack a planned, coordinated assault and an effort to derail the formal ratification of the 2020 presidential election.

Thompson said it was an insurrection and argued the rioters "came dangerously close to succeeding." He noted 140 police officers were injured in the melee
