After more than a year and a half helping patients fight off COVID-19, a nurse in North Carolina is celebrating a huge win and planning to give back after hitting the jackpot in a North Carolina Lottery game.

Shameka Waller, a clinical advising nurse in Charlotte, said her job and two children have usually kept her too busy to play the lottery, per the Durham Herald Sun.

"I don't play the lottery that often," she said. "I always see the tickets at the gas station, but just don't have time to stop and play, especially with a baby."

After deciding "you can't win if you don't play," she signed up for Online Play and purchased her first Cash 5 ticket, using a special set of numbers, according to lottery officials. After choosing the numbers based on her family's birthdays, Waller discovered the following day that she had won the $216,614 jackpot.

Waller claimed her prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Wednesday (September 15), bringing home a total of $153,255 after taxes. She already knows how she wants to spend her newfound winnings.

"This win, it's just great for so many reasons," she said. "I know what I want to do — I want to continue to serve people in need. I want to start a business that helps elderly, bed-bound patients get access to testing and treatment for COVID-19."
