Miami Marlins Postpone Their Season Due To COVID-19 Outbreak: Report

A coronavirus outbreak in the Miami Marlins clubhouse has forced Major League Baseball to postpone the team's season to ensure the players' health and safety. The news was first reported by Marlins reporter Craig Mish on Twitter.

"The Miami Marlins 2020 season at least temporarily, has been paused. This will allow the team to continue to monitor health and safety of players."

USA Today Sports reporter Bob Nightengale said the team is unlikely to play any games for the next week.

The Marlins' remaining games against the Baltimore Orioles and their upcoming series against the Washington Nationals will be postponed. It is unclear when the seven games will be made up, but Major League Baseball has a contingency plan in case teams cannot play all 60 games of the shortened season.

According to New York Post reporter Joel Sherman, the league will use winning percentages to determine playoff seeding if teams are unable to play all 60 games.

"Heard MLB would like to get 60-game season in for all teams, but not wedded to it. If some teams play 58, 56, 55, etc, winning pct would determine playoff spots," Sherman tweeted.

The Phillies are also going to get shut down for the rest of the week. According to New York Times reporter Tyler Kepler, the Yankees and Orioles, who were supposed to play the Phillies and Marlins, this week, will instead play each other.

"Confirming various reports of this ever-changing schedule... Marlins now off until Monday, Phillies off until Friday, Yankees will play at Orioles Wednesday and Thursday," Kepler said.

The decision to postpone the Marlins' season was made after at least 15 players and two coaches tested positive for coronavirus.
